Interceltic and Atlantic European Watersports Games![]()
The week’s schedule is busy and all the participating regions will contribute to the week’s entertainments. The traditional opening ceremony in Morlaix will mark the beginning of the festival. You will be able to see bands and music groups, but also attend concerts, street theatre shows … and all that for free. This week will be the occasion to discover or rediscover famous Celtic bands or local bands. Each city will provide activities and entertainments offering a large choice for every one. The closing ceremony in Carantec will gather all the delegations present during the festival for a farewell party. The week is going to be really full of events you will not want to miss ! Since their creation in 1995 in Brittany by “Nautisme en Finistère”, the Interceltic Watersports Games have been organised each year by one of the Celtic regions of Western Europe. After the 2003 edition in the Bay of Morlaix, the games are back to where it all started from July 13th to 22nd. As in 2003The sports organizations and regional institutions of Brittany, Finistère and the Pays de Morlaix have committed themselves to organising this large-scale event. A special task force of the Pays de Morlaix will help organizing the event with the technical support of “Nautisme en Finistère”. The increasing success of the games has attracted non-Celtic countries and regions to this major event. Now the Games have the full name of “Interceltic and Atlantic European Watersports Games”. In Cornwall, for the 2006 edition, more than 700 competitors came from 11 regions across Europe such as the Isle of Man, Wales, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia, Asturias, the Basque country - Euskadi , Ireland , Cornwall and Portugal. This year, Normandy, the Canaries and Cantabria (Portugal) have been invited to participate, totalling 13 regions. The Celtic Watersports Festival is a great opportunity to watch many watersports at the same time and within easy reach. 700 competitors will compete in Rowing, Sand yachting, surfing, kayaking, diving, sailing, … But, as in each edition, culture, the maritime and economic activities will be highlighted in the course of the games. During the 2003 edition in Brittany, more than 900 competitors and coaches, 300 musicians and dancers, 150 exhibitors and assistants and 350 organizers, totalling about 1,700 people took part in the games, attracting about 50,000 visitors.
